[From notes by John Szalay:] James Ripley was assigned to the 55th Coast
Artillery on Oahu Hawaii around 1940. This picture of Ripley was taken at
Fort Ruger, which is now part of the Diamond head state park on Oahu. The
14in shell he is leaning on was in front of the Ft Ruger HQ of the Coast
Artillery, part of the Pearl Harbor defenses.
Julia (Judy) Canova married James Ripley in Hawaii, but the union was
annulled a few months later. The 2nd photo here is from the period of
their marrage.
