[From notes by Viola Canova Clarke:] Oscar Nolan Canova was the youngest of his brothers and sisters. He was 8 years old when his father was killed and still a minor when his mother died. He was a ward of his older brother, Ed, and was s huffled from one member of the family to another. At age eighteen, he married Amy Butler, his high school sweetheart. Nolan was a telegraph operator for Seaboard Railroad and operated a resturant at one time. The Valdosta Times described him as a "young man of good character and business ability." He was a fine musician and traveled with his own band.
